She’d circled the date on her calendar in three colors of marker, bookmarked hotel deals, and even practiced saying “Excelsior!” in the mirror. There was only one problem—she didn’t want to be “that mom” at a convention full of twenty-somethings in spandex. So, naturally, she guilt-tripped her 18-year-old son, Jeremy, into going. “Come on, Jeremy,” she pleaded over breakfast. “It’ll be fun! You love superheroes.” Jeremy sighed. “Mom, I *like* superheroes. You love superheroes. There’s a difference.” “I’m your mother. You have to come with me,” Audrey said, tapping the edge of her coffee mug for emphasis. “It’s the law.” Jeremy rolled his eyes. “Fine. But only if *you* dress up as Superman.” Audrey grinned. “Deal.” --- Two days later, she showed up at his bedroom door holding two costumes: Superman and Wonder Woman. “I rented both,” she said cheerfully. “We can decide who’s who.” Jeremy stared at her. “Wait. Both?” “Well, I said I’d dress as Superman *if* you dressed as Wonder Woman,” she said sweetly. Jeremy blinked. “I didn't say that. You tricked me.” Audrey shrugged. “Call it a heroic compromise.” They both stood there for a moment, locked in a battle of pride and stubbornness. Finally, Jeremy sighed the sigh of a defeated man. “Fine. But if we’re doing this, we’re doing it *right.*” --- The morning of the convention, their bathroom looked like a glitter bomb had gone off. Jeremy was wrestling with the Wonder Woman tiara and wig. Audrey was trying to figure out how to zip the Superman costume without dislocating a shoulder. “Mom, this is *way* too tight,” Jeremy said, twisting in the mirror. “How does Gal Gadot even *breathe* in this thing?” “Probably better than I’m breathing in this cape,” Audrey muttered, adjusting her red boots. “I think I just compressed a lung.” By the time the Uber arrived, they were both sweating, sparkly, and silently questioning every life choice that led to this moment. --- When they stepped out at the convention center, they expected to be laughed at. Instead, they were *mobbed.* “OMG, Superman and Wonder Woman!” screamed one cosplayer dressed as Deadpool. “You guys look amazing!” Suddenly, a crowd formed around them. Cameras flashed. People asked them to pose together—Superman with his arm around Wonder Woman, back-to-back “battle stance,” even a mock “wedding photo.” Jeremy whispered through gritted teeth, “Mom, they think we planned this.” Audrey, still smiling for the cameras, whispered back, “Jeremy, just *embrace it*. You’re fabulous.” After twenty minutes of photos, someone yelled, “Best cosplay duo of the day!” and handed them a coupon for half-off funnel cake. --- As they finally escaped into the main hall, Jeremy’s wig slightly askew and Audrey’s cape dragging, they both burst into laughter. “Okay,” Audrey said, still catching her breath, “next year, we’ll go as The Joker and Harley Quinn.” Jeremy smirked. “Only if I’m Harley.” Audrey raised an eyebrow. “Deal. But this time, *I’m* picking the heels.” They high-fived, walked into the convention center—heroes, legends, and possibly the most photogenic mother-son duo in Comic Con history.
